Naptown was conceived by Velvet Brown as a love letter to her hometown of Annapolis, Maryland. Knowing this, I wanted to capture the fun of growing up as well as the nostalgia of childhood in a piece that doesn’t take itself too seriously. I’ve always been inspired by Velvet’s success across multiple genres. I wanted to highlight her classical tuba chops in addition to giving her some licks that sounded like something she would play with Howard Johnson and Gravity.

Naptown was premiered by Velvet at the 2014 International Tuba Euphonium Conference at Indiana University in Bloomington, IN.
